State of NJ Property Senior Citizen Property Tax Reimbursement Program

August  2010 update:

The Division of Taxation has begun mailing the 2009 property tax reimbursement (PTR) checks to eligible  applicants who filed their application by the original due date of June 1, 2010.

Public Inquiries can call toll free phone  1-800-882-6597 or e-mail nj.taxatio@treas.state.nj.us

Reimbursements are being sent to those senior citizens who were in the program prior to 2010.

Information about the program:

The PTR program reimburses qualified applicants for the property tax increases they may incur each year from the base year. The base year is the first year an applicant meets eligibility requirements.  It is important to understand  the taxpayer pays the taxes as they come due and then the increase is reimbursed the following year. For example, the applications to be mailed are for the 2009 tax year. The deadline to submit the application is June 1, 2010.

The program is available to permanent New Jersey residents as follows:

Are age 65 or over or disabled, have lived in NJ for 10 years, have owned and occupied their home for the last (3) years and meet income limitations.

Residents applying for the 2009 reimbursement  must have total income for 2008 that was $70,000 or less and total income for 2009 of $80,000 or less.

Why Beach tags?

Beach tags are required in most municipalities along the New Jersey coastline. They are a user fee to help offset the local municipalities cost of maintaining their beaches and providing lifeguards and other services such as trash removal, beach cleaning and the purchase of needed equipment and police protection.

The cost of these items and all of the other beach benefits are supported by this user fee known as the beach tag. The beach fee program was approved by the residents of Ocean City in 1976 and continued since that time to help offset all of the costs associated with the beach.
