Yard Waste
Minimize

Yard Waste includes grass clippings, leaves, brush and trimmings and these items are all recyclable. The City of Ocean City currently has separate collections for grass and leaves together and then another for brush, but soon these will be combined into one "Yard Waste" Collection.

Since Yard Waste is recyclable and will help Ocean City reach its new goal of saving $100,000 over the next year by recycling 30% of municipal waste, please remember not to throw these organic wastes into the trash, but to put them out for recycling collection.

You should not put yard waste or any other recycling in plastic bags.  The reason is that most plastic bag are not recyclable and are therefore trash, so, the contents are assumed to be trash and will be picked up by the trash crew and not the recycling crew.

You are encouraged to put your extra yard waste in a brown paper bag or purchase the larger biodegradable yard waste bags sold at most hardware and grocery stores.  You do not have to mark these paper bags as the trash and recycle crews are aware of this type setout.

Remember to check this page often for updates so you understand the change in collection.
Thank you for your participation in recycling. It helps the City’s economy and the environment!

Trash & Recycling Service

Who needs to recycle?
In Ocean City, as in the State of New Jersey, it is the law to recycle. However, in Ocean City, we think of recycling as much more than a mandate. It is an aspect of good citizenship and environmental stewardship. Therefore, we require that all citizens and visitors comply with our program to maintain the high quality of life that they come to expect from our island.
Recycling is beneficial to the environment in many ways. Recycling saves energy, results in less air and water pollution and leads to reductions in greenhouse gas generation. In fact, approximately 1.67 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) equivalents are avoided for every ton of municipal solid waste recycled.
Besides the environmental benefits, recycling is also a major component of New Jersey’s economy. A study conducted by the Northeast Recycling Council and USEPA found that almost 27,000 people in our State are employed in recycling and reuse establishments and that total receipts form these establishments are valued at over $5.9 Billion annually.
In Ocean City the cost of solid waste and recycling services has dropped over the past few years due in part to growing recycling rates. Every ton of waste that is recycled saves our City over $100.
City employees, homeowners, renters, visitors, business owners and students all need to recycle to make the program work. The City of Ocean City is one of few communities in the country that offers weekly curbside (including alleys) recycling to all households and businesses in the City. The service is even better in the high season when twice a week recycling services are provided. For businesses to receive service, they must prepare recyclables for collection the same way as households and set at the curb or alley for pick-up.
When is Collection Services Provided?
During the summer starting on the third Monday in June and ending on the Saturday following the first Monday in September, trash and recycling collection is provided according to the following schedule:
